Submersible Pump :

     A submersible pump is a pump which has a hermetically sealed motor close-coupled to the pump body. The whole assembly is submerged in the fluid to be pumped. The advantage of this type of pump is that it can provide a significant lifting force as it does not rely on external air pressure to lift the fluid.

       A system of mechanical seals are used to prevent the fluid being pumped entering the motor and causing a short circuit. The pump can either be connected to a pipe, flexible hose or lowered down guide rails or wires so that the pump sits on a "ducks foot" coupling, thereby connecting it to the delivery pipework.

     Submersible pumps are found in many applications, single stage pumps are used for drainage, sewage pumping, general industrial pumping and slurry pumping. Multiple stage submersible pumps are typically lowered down a borehole and used for water abstraction or in water wells.

     Submersible pumps are also used in oil wells. By increasing the pressure at the bottom of the well significantly, more oil can be produced from the well compared to natural production. This makes Electric Submersible Pumping (ESP) a form of "artificial lift" (as opposed to natural flow) along with Gas Lift, Beam Pumping, Plunger Lift and Progressive cavity pump. New varieties of ESP can include a water/oil separator which permits the water to be reinjected into the reservoir without the need to lift it to the surface.

 SUBMERSIBLE PUMPS ARE USED IN MANY VARYING APPLICATIONS :

Ø       Vertical Deep Well Pumps can be used where shaft elongation problems are created by very deep settings or when the well is not straight.

Ø       Vertical Booster Pumps can be installed in open sumps for many applications where flooding can be a threat to surface mounted motors, where space is at a minimum and where appearance prohibits surface installations.

Ø       Horizontal In-Line Booster Pumps work efficiently to provide constant added pumping pressure that may be required in the line. They may be installed at any angle.

 SUBMERSIBLE PUMP DESIGN

Ø       Few items provide as quick a return on investment and as long a work life as submersible pumps. Their compact and streamlined design makes them ideal for wells and other jobs where space is limited.

Ø       Submersibles have the advantage of being able to work in the water source being pumped. As a result the submersible is not subject to the suction lift limitations of other typical pumps. No suction hose is required helping to save money and time while eliminating a potential source of problems. The pump is limited only by the discharge head it is capable of producing.

Ø        The pumps can also be classified by motoro size and voltage requirements. Smaller units, with 1/3 and 1/2 horsepower 115 volt motors are ideal for homeowner use or light duty jobs. Experienced dewatering contractors will often choose pumps with 230/240 volt 3 phase motors as they provide the higher performance and cost less to run over time.

Ø       The pump motors use a vertical drive shaft to turn an impeller and generate the velocity needed to create the discharge pressure. Water flows in through the bottom and is discharged out the top of the pump casing. Submersible trash pumps use a vortex design that allows the pump to handle some solids without passing them through the casing.

Ø       Combining electricity and water obviously brings a certain element of risk. Further, it is difficult and often impossible to know if there is a problem once the pump is submerged. As a result the pump should provide some built-in protections to ensure safety and guard against damage to the equipment.

Ø        A high quality pump will have its motor housed in a watertight compartment and equip it with thermal overload sensors that shut down the motor to prevent damage fromover heating. Pumps should also be used with GFCI protected circuits.

Ø        Maintenance is minimal and generally consists of periodically inspecting the electrical cord and the mechanical seal lubricant. There are non of the concerns common with engine driven pumps such as noise, fuel or emissions.

Ø        Control boxes and float switches are available for unattended operation of submersible pumps. The boxes provide protection against voltage fluctuations and incorrect phasing while float switches turn the pump on and off according to fluctuating water levels. A number of different accessories are available but care should be taken that they meet the electrical requirements of the pump.

Four inch Submersible pumps from National Pump Co. These submersible pumps  range from 4 gallons per minute thru 90 gallons per minute.  Horse power ranges from 1/2 to 7.5 hp.  All stainless   construction.  Built in check valves on all submersible pumps up to 1.5 hp.  Submersibles over 2hp will need external check valves.  Submersible pumps from 2hp to 7.5hp will be tapped two inch.

 

 

Three inch(3”) Grundfos submersible pump

The 3” Grundfos submersible pump is made to fit into a 3” diameter casing. Most 3” wells when installed were fitted with jet pumps and  deep well ejectors. Not a very efficient system. The 3” submersible pump can deliver twice as much water as a jet pump with less horsepower. Your pressure is always better with a submersible pump. This 3” submersible pump comes in  in 1/3, 1/2, 3/4, 1 and 1.5 horse power.  Pumping ranges from 5 to 30 gallons per minute.  There are so many pumps to choose from, we have not put them on the shopping cart.  Please call for help with choosing the right pump for your application.  If possible, tell us your water level and the total depth of the well.

        Submersible water well pumps need wire capable of use in under water situations. We stock 3 wire with ground submersible pump cable, as well as 2 wire with ground pump cable. The following chart shows the maximum distance in feet you can go from the power source to the submersible pump motor. This includes the UF burial cable from the power source to the well head, and the distance down into the well with the submersible pump wire. If you are near the figure shown, moving up to the next size will help to protect against being on the limit. The chart is for use of AWG copper wire.
